Lattice cuffs with Arabic trails – bridal mehndi by Zakia, Ilford

When to Book Your Bridal Mehndi (and When to Apply It)

One of the first questions brides ask me is when they should book their mehndi, and when it should actually go on. Get the timing right and your colour will be at its deepest on the day. Here’s the timeline I recommend after more than 20 years of bridal bookings in East London.

6–12 months before: start looking

Save designs you love, and look at artists’ real work rather than edited photos. Read Google reviews and check whether the artist offers a trial. If your wedding falls in peak season (May to September) or near Eid, this is when the most popular dates start to go.

2–6 months before: book your artist

  • Confirm your date with a deposit. At Bridal Mehndi it’s £50 per day, which secures your slot.
  • Tell your artist roughly how many family members and guests also want mehndi, so enough time is planned.
  • Ask about travel if you want mehndi at home or at the venue.

4–8 weeks before: have your trial

A trial lets you choose your design and see how dark the stain goes on your skin. Bring a photo of your outfit, any designs you love, and an idea of how far up the arms you want to go. I offer every bride a free trial at my Ilford studio.

1–2 days before: apply your bridal mehndi

This is the part most brides don’t expect. Natural henna starts orange and darkens over 24 to 48 hours. If it goes on the morning of the wedding, it won’t have reached its full colour in time for your photos. Applying it one or two days before means the stain peaks right on the day.

  • Leave 2–5 hours for bridal mehndi, depending on coverage and whether feet are included.
  • Plan a relaxed evening afterwards: you’ll need to keep the paste on overnight.
  • Do waxing, threading, manicures and pedicures before your mehndi, not after.

The night before and the big day

Follow your aftercare: scrape the paste off rather than washing it, and keep water away for 12–24 hours. By your wedding day the colour should be deep and even.

Quick timeline

  1. 6–12 months: shortlist artists and designs
  2. 2–6 months: book and pay your deposit
  3. 4–8 weeks: trial and design decisions
  4. 1–2 days: bridal mehndi application
  5. Wedding day: colour at its darkest
